Harmonic Mitigation Using Passive Harmonic Filters: Case Study in a Steel Mill Power System

In this study, we mitigated the harmonic voltage in a power system that contained roughing mill (RM) and finishing (FM) motor drives. AC/DC converter type RM drive is non-linear, large-capacity varying load adversely affects quality, e.g., flicker, distortion, etc. The drop can be compensated within certain limit by using proper capacity of capacitor bank. addition, distortion controlled as per guidelines IEEE Std. 519 passive filter corresponding to characteristic harmonics load. provide an economical solution mitigating with reactive supply. However, at planning level, attention should paid avoid overvoltage caused leading under light conditions also problem parallel resonance between step-down transformer. when designing reactor, K-factor peak must considered; requires dielectric material considers voltage. purpose study was acquire better understanding applications well verify field measurement, analysis, design filters together its performance.
